1
Draw a line on the stone where you want to make the cut. Create a perfectly straight line to make it easy to know where to place the chisel.
-
2
Hold the masonry chisel in one hand and tap on the handle with a mashing hammer. You can cut through stone or shave off unwanted edges using this technique.

3
Make repeated small, soft taps on the masonry chisel when cutting through large pieces of stone. Do this on both sides of the stone along the line you drew. Eventually the stone will break apart, but be patient. If you try to go too fast, you may end up with an uneven cut.
-
4
Strike the masonry chisel harder for smaller objects like bricks. Use the mashing hammer, and with one good blow you should be able to cut through in a straight line.
