Animal trainers teach various animals to perform under different conditions and obey certain commands. The field is most suitable for those who have an innate love of animals and the patience to train animals. Animal trainers work in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries and theme parks. Read on to learn more.

  1. Step 1

    Enroll in a community college or an animal training school which gives hands-on practical training by professional animal trainers. Pick a school that offers a variety of courses and seminars and provides a certificate or a diploma at the end of the training.

    Get a college degree in any of the subjects that would prove helpful in your career as an animal trainer. Choose from zoology, animal psychology, biological sciences and veterinary studies.

  3. Step 3

    Work with professional animal trainers to gain experience and build up your resume. Obtain an internship at your local veterinary office or volunteer at animal shelters, farms or wildlife sanctuaries.

  4. Step 4

    Practice your communication skills as animal trainers often speak in front of an audience. Keep yourself up to date on information related to animals so that you are able to answer questions during a tour or seminar.

  5. Step 5

    Contact an animal facility where you are interested in working with and inquire about job openings and requirements. Keep in mind that many companies require trainers to have certain education and experience.

  6. Step 6

    Browse through your local newspaper and search the Internet to look for job openings as an animal trainer. Send a professional resume and references to apply for open positions.
