A half hitch knot is not a super reliable or slip-proof knot. You can, however, use it to handle light loads if you need to. This knot is most useful since it will help you be able to tie a variety of other hitch knots. The following will show you how to properly tie a half hitch knot.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A piece of rope
  • Something to tie the rope around
  1. Step 1

Hook your rope around a tree, post, pole or even around your leg if you want to practice this knot.

  2. Step 2

Make one side of the rope shorter than the other. In this example, we will say the short end of the rope is on the left side before you begin the knot.

  3. Step 3

Take the short end of the rope and place it underneath the long end.

  4. Step 4

Bring the short end of the rope upward. Stick the short end through the hole between where the rope is crossed and the pole or tree.

  5. Step 5

Pull the short end of rope to the left side of the knot once it is through the loop and hanging downward.

  6. Step 6

Push the knot toward the pole to tighten the rope. The long end of the rope should now be on the right side of the short end.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want a more reliable knot, try tying the half hitch knot twice or turn it into another type of hitch knot where the half hitch is its foundation.
  • The half hitch knot in and of itself should not be used as a permanent fix or to handle heavy loads.
