1
Choose a design from a photo, a tile design book or your own imagination. Make plans for any odd spaces such as bathtub and shower corners, toilets and sinks.
-
2
Buy books or software from a home improvement store to aid in layout if you have a difficult time visualizing the grid.
-
-
3
Make a jury stick or tile stick from a straight 1 by 2 piece of wood marked with the proper tile spacing. Lay tile in a straight line using proper spacing for your grout lines, making sure to take into account any accent tile. If your tiles are rectangular you may need 2 tile sticks for the horizontal and vertical layouts.
-
4
Find the center of the wall to lay tiles with symmetry, or lay tiles starting at one corner. Lay tile from the main entrance on a floor so a full row of tile is visible when walking into the room.
-
5
Use sections or a grid pattern matching the height and width of the tiles. Use a snap chalk line and laser level to get lines straight and ensure even spacing around the section.
-
6
Lay a full row, then another perpendicular to the first, making a T shape. If done correctly, with the spacing even and uniform, this will square the room for the rest of the times. Follow the instructions for using spacers, adhering tiles to the wall or floor and spreading grout.

Tips & Warnings
Ask for help if you have too many problems. It's better to pay someone to lay tile for you than to get frustrated and mess up a room.
