For the DIY enthusiast looking to install some tiles, buying ready-made tiles spacers is just not an option. Making your own tile spacers will let you find the perfect space for separating tiles and will save you some money along the way. Follow these few steps to quickly make tile spacers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on the width of the space you want between tiles. Since you're customizing your tile spacers, you might as well get the space between tiles exactly right. Lay four tiles out together to see what looks best and then take exact measurements of the space between the tiles.

  2. Step 2

Take a few strips of balsa wood and size them down to the width you found from your spacing measurements. Then, cut the strips into a few more strips, each about two inches long.

  3. Step 3

Separate the strips into pairs. Lay one strip on top of the other so that the two form four right angles at their intersection.

  4. Step 4

Drive a nail into each of the strips so that the two strips form a cross. If the strips are very thin, then you can move on to the next step. If the strips are fat enough that the top strip will lie above the tile, then shave some of the wood off the bottom strip.

  5. Step 5

Stick a block of wood or a small rubber ball onto the exposed edge of the nail to cover the nail's point. This is primarily for safety, so you don't have exposed nails when you lay the tile. To remove the spacer, pull from the neck of the nail instead of the protective covering.
