How to Use a Notched Trowel

A notched trowel is necessary when applying tile. They're used to make sure that you apply the proper depth of setting material to the surface. Notched trowels come in different sizes and depths as well as in rectangular or V-shaped notches. Follow these steps to learn how to properly use a notched trowel.

1. Determine what size notched trowel you need. This is determined by the size of the tile, the surface to be tiled and the type of setting material that you're using. The depth of the notched trowel should be two-thirds the thickness of the tile you are setting.

2. Apply the setting material to the substrate in a small area. Scoop out some setting material using the short end of the notched trowel. Drop it on the substrate then use the long, flat side of the notched trowel to smooth it out.

3. Use the notched side of the trowel to apply additional setting material. Comb the substrate area until the notches are full to determine that you have the proper depth setting of the area.

4. Smooth the notched setting material. Use the flat, long side of the notched trowel. This will make a smooth consistent bedding in which to lay the tile.

5. Lay down the tile. Apply firm even pressure so the tile will make contact with the setting material that you put down with the notched trowel.

Tips & Warnings

• Apply just enough setting material to do a couple of tiles at a time. The longer the setting material has been sitting the more difficult it is to spread with the notched trowel.
