Installing floor tile yourself can save a lot of money. In order to get that professional look, you will need to use different tools to assist in laying it. Nippers score ceramic tile in circular, straight or angled cuts. Here's how to easily utilize them.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start by marking where the cut should be made directly on the tile with a grease marker. Alternatively, you can make a template with a piece of cardboard and then transfer the marks.

  2. Step 2

Put on protective eyewear that completely covers your eyes. Sharp pieces could fly while you're cutting.

  3. Step 3

Hold the piece you'll be cutting firmly with one hand and the nippers in the other hand. The tool should be parallel to the cut line.

  4. Step 4

Start to make small cuts or nips to reach the cut line. Proceed very slowly and make very small cuts. This action will reduce the risk of breaking it.

  5. Step 5

Find the cut line and begin to follow it by continuously cutting around it slowly. Continue to do this until you have the desired cut. Make sure to check to confirm it fits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice on a scrap piece of tile to get used to the nippers.
  • If the tile can not be marked with a grease pen because of its glossy surface, then use a pencil on the underside of it instead.
  • If you're making many angled, straight or many irregular cuts, it may be easier to use a tile cutter or wet saw.
  • Always wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes during the cutting process.
