We often tend to think of "drive time" as a stressful part of our day, with images of road rage and traffic jams filling our imaginations. Although most Americans spend at least an hour behind the wheel every day, we don't have to let that time increase our stress levels. We can actually use driving time as time to let go of the stress in our lives and relax. Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Audio books
  • Postcards
  • Water
  • Music CDs
  1. Step 1

Time yourself. Waiting at a red light when you're in a hurry can lead to stress overload. If you count the seconds that you're stopped, you will get a more accurate picture of your wait time and decrease your driving stress.

  2. Step 2

Practice hand yoga. Next time that you're at a standstill in traffic, stretch your arms over the top of the steering wheel and spread and stretch your fingers. Hold, flex and repeat.

  3. Step 3

Read a book. Well, not exactly, but listening to an audio book can help you relax while you drive. You could even pick up a non-fiction audio book and learn something new while you're waiting in rush hour traffic.

  4. Step 4

Admire the view. If your drive home consists of concrete and more concrete, attach a beautiful postcard to your sun visor. Flip it down, take a few deep breaths and relax while you're stopped at another red light.

  5. Step 5

Drink water. It can be very difficult to drink your 8 glasses of water every day. So carry a bottle of your favorite water with you and finish it off while you drive.

  6. Step 6

Sing. Nothing is more relaxing than belting out a few verses of your favorite songs and your car is the perfect place to privately practicing your singing. You might be tied down with your seat belt, but your heart will be dancing.

Tips & Warnings
  • No matter how relaxed you become in the car, be sure to pay attention to your driving. No amount of de-stressing while driving is worth getting into an accident.
