A pet can be a member of a family, a companion or a playmate. While most people don't get a pet with the intention of having to find a new home, there are reasons why you might have to get rid of your pet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with friends and family once you know that you need a new home for your pet. Find out if any of them are interested in adopting your pet. Not only do they know your animal, you can feel comfortable with their environment. If they are not personally interested, ask for referrals.

  2. Step 2

Check with adoption agencies and shelters. If you can't find a home and are in a time crunch, an animal shelter might be your only option. However, most places keep a list of contacts for specific types of animals. Find out if anyone has inquired about the type of pet you have.

  3. Step 3

Advertise your pet for adoption. Many people who want pets don't want the hassle of dealing with a newborn pet. You need to advertise your pet in local classified ads or online with a free classified listing. Be sure to mention why your pet needs a new home, your pet's age and if your pet is house trained.

  4. Step 4

Set up a play date with potential adopters. If possible, take your pet to the potential adopter's home and check out the environment of the home. Evaluate how your pet interacts with the potential adopter. You must be comfortable with the person who is going to be adopting your pet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some shelters will euthanise any animal not adopted in a set amount of time. Only a no-kill shelter will keep your pet until she is adopted.
