Build Leadership Skills in a Strong Willed Child

Strong willed children have natural tendencies for leadership: drive, determination and an attitude built for achievement. If we can strip out the need for control, what is left is a natural born leader, destined for accomplishment.

Instructions

    • 1

Help the child understand control. One of the most important lessons a strong willed child needs to learn is that even though they can't always have control of a situation, they still need to be productive and accept responsibility. One way to teach this is for you to maintain control. The child can learn that positive things still happen, even if they are not in control of the situation.

Set up clear rules: maintain a schedule, follow a routine. The strong willed child may be resistant to constant change and spontaneity. Following a routine that is defined by clear rules can help the child feel more positive about their role.

    • 3

Give the child choices. Let the strong willed child make simple choices. Limit the choices to two, and let the child decide. Something as simple as choosing one of two favorite desserts for a special treat can be enough to make a child feel good inside.

Help the child build a vocabulary and put words to feelings. When the child is small, help him identify what he is feeling, and help him express how it feels. For example, if the puppy chews his favorite toy, help him identify his feelings (anger, sadness) and help him express these feelings. As he grows, he can become a better communicator and without the need to vent his emotions inappropriately.
