How to Join the Sons of the Republic of Texas

The Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) is a lineage organization which promotes the historical and memorial heritage of the Republic of Texas. Members must be male and able to document their family line to a direct ancestor who was a resident of the Republic of Texas (March 2, 1836 to February 19, 1846). Follow these steps to determine eligibility for membership in SRT.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the direct family line backward; begin with parents, then grandparents, then great-grandparents until reaching the era of the Republic of Texas.

    • 2

Identify the Texas citizen, called the Qualifying Ancestor, in the family line. Gather documentation that links the line together. This documentation can include vital records (birth, marriage and death), land records, poll lists, censuses and probate proceedings. Each generation should have proof linking it to the one before and after. All documentation must meet the requirements of SRT.

    • 3

Express an interest in joining SRT, either through contacting a local chapter or the General Office. There are various membership levels, including a junior level for those 18 years or younger.

    • 4

Complete the application. Submit it along with the documentation, membership fees and the signatures of three sponsoring Sons of the Republic of Texas members. The SRT will review the information.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Texas State Library and Archives (TSLA) in Austin has microfilms, reference books and records regarding the Republic of Texas. Some information may be available through interlibrary loan, where the TSLA sends the sources to a local library for research purposes. Contact your local library to find out more about interlibrary loan.

  • Genealogy courses are offered by many libraries and local genealogy societies. These classes provide valuable tools and techniques that aid in tracing the ancestor.
