The cow hitch is a simple symmetrical knot, often used for tying a cow to a pole for grazing. It is two half hitches tied in opposite directions. It is best to use at least four feet of nylon rope when practicing this knot. Follow these steps to tie the cow hitch knot.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wrap your rope around a pole, tree or whatever you want to tie your animal to. Let the short end cross underneath the main rope, which is tied to your animal at the other end.

  2. Step 2

Bring the short end up and wrap it around the back of the pole. Insert it through the open loop you just made. The free end should be running parallel to the main line.

  3. Step 3

Tighten the knot. Apply equal strain to both ends to make sure the knot is secure.

  4. Step 4

Make the knot more secure by tying a pedigree cow hitch. You can use this if only one end of the rope will be taking some strain.

  5. Step 5

Bring the free end of the rope up. Put it down through the loop that is on the bottom on the pole. Pull it all the way through and then pull on the main line to secure the knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • The cow hitch is considered a jam knot because the more strain it takes, the more secure the knot becomes. But when the strain is removed, it can easily be slipped.
  • You can also add an overhand knot to the cow hitch to strengthen it.
  • This hitch won't be secure unless there is pulling at both ends of the knot. It is usually used for temporary purposes.
