How to Become a Geographer

A geographer is a scientist who identifies studies and analyzes the distribution, configuration and character of the earth's surface. They are different from cartographers, scientists who map the earth's surface. While many might also think this is a dying discipline, they are far from correct. Geographers are still doing vital, exciting work. Read on to learn how to become a geographer.

        Go to the website of the American Association of Geographers. Drill down to check the web page describing the various careers available as a geographer.

        Excel in the sciences, mathematics and languages while in high school. These areas of study are important to the eventual study of geography. Subscribe to "The Professional Geographer." This is the journal of geographers and will further define issues of current interest.

        Check a ranking of collegiate departments of geography. While this may vary from year to year, it will offer a starting place to narrow down your application process to a university.
