How to Cope With a Boss that Gossips

Many people have experienced conflict in the workplace. Among the most common issues are harassment, bullying or gossip. Generally these issues can be resolved by bringing it to the attention of your supervisor. But, what happens when you find out that it is your boss who is untrustworthy or gossips? Follow these steps to resolve the problem before your work life becomes unbearable.

1. Speak to your boss about the behavior. Explain to your boss that you are aware he may not keep personal matters confidential and that you are uncomfortable about it. Be sure you are approaching your boss professionally and, if you feel it to be necessary, have another member of the management or human resources team present.

2. Keep your personal life private. Do not divulge details of your personal life to your boss or other co-workers as this only provides ammunition.

3. Be on your best behavior at work. If you are doing your job and only that, this will leave little to gossip about.

4. Do not participate in gossip with your boss. Participating in the behavior is condoning it. You may follow up with a positive statement about the person who is being attacked. This will eliminate the fun of gossiping.

5. Review your company's code of conduct or ethics policy. Many companies have a policy against this type of behavior.

6. Keep clear and accurate records of any issues that occur with your boss. Be clear, concise and brief as this information may be used in an inquiry or court case.

7. Take the issue to management above your boss if it continues. If your boss is at the top of the management chain speak to your company's human resources department. If your company does not have an human resources department and the issue is leading to stress or unhappiness with your job, you may wish to speak to an attorney.
