Changing the flooring can dramatically transform the look of any room. With all of the flooring options available, you can add many personal and elegant touches. If you decide to buy floor tile, it is a straightforward process. Read on to learn how to buy floor tile.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about the different types available and choose the one that meets your needs. If you are a first-time installer, consider the differences closely. Machine made ones are always uniform and straight and typically cost less. Hand made ones can be less consistent and cost more, but may have richer colors for a more interesting look.

  2. Step 2

Measure your space to determine how much tile you will need. Use a large tape measure with self lock and determine the width and length.

  3. Step 3

Multiply your measurements to calculate your total square footage. Some stores will help estimate the amount you will need. Provide accurate measurements of length and width of the area and draw a rough sketch.

  4. Step 4

Consider your options of where to purchase. Buy your tile from wholesalers, local retail specialty stores, home improvement or floor liquidation stores.

  5. Step 5

Decide how you will get the tile to your location. Delivery will be required if you do not have a truck or car large enough to carry the weight. If ordering online, some retailers offer price discounts based on the amount you will have shipped.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you buy online, some shippers will not take the tile off of the truck. You may need to rent a dolly or have help to move the boxes.
  • Consider consulting an interior decorator to help you choose your floor colors.
  • Don't forget about the other tools and equipment you will need if you will be installing yourself.
