How to Pick an Outdoor Kitchen Consultant

When building an outdoor kitchen, many people may choose to hire an outdoor kitchen consultant, someone who can assist and advise them in the design and purchase of the kitchen and its components. Choosing a consultant, however, is also something that should be thought through and considered before acted upon. Read on to learn how to pick an outdoor kitchen consultant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine whether you need a consultant for your project. If you are starting from scratch and have no idea what you are doing, then an outdoor kitchen consultant is probably a good idea. If you have some experience with architecture and design, and know what kinds of appliances and materials you are looking for, you may have no use for a consultant.

  2. Step 2

Search for available consultants. This can be done through home improvement stores, a phone book, the Internet or word-of-mouth. Many interior decoration offices have a consultant on hand.

  3. Step 3

Interview possible candidates. Collect some basic information about them. Tell each what you are looking for, what your expectations are for the project and what you hope they will be able to provide you. Be sure to discuss cost in the interview. Both parties should be entirely and correctly informed as to the amount of money that will be paid to the consultant, if hired.

  4. Step 4

Think about the consultants you have interviewed and compare them to each other. Think about which sounded the most knowledgeable to you and which person's ideas sounded the most compatible with yours.

  5. Step 5

Investigate your favorite few consultants. Check them out with your local Better Business Bureau office and with your state's attorney general's office. Find out the nature of any complaints.

  6. Step 6

Talk with others who have hired the kitchen consultant you are considering working with for your project. Ask the consultant's other customers whether you can come visit their kitchens to see the results.

  7. Step 7

Read all documents in your contract with your consultant before signing on the dotted line.

Tips & Warnings
  • While many may see experience as a very important qualification (and in many cases it is), you should also consider that younger and newer consultants may have more modern or edgy ideas. Determine your style, and pick a consultant that reflects that style.
  • Beware of frauds and persons merely pretending to be outdoor kitchen consultants. Ask for identification and qualifications before hiring and paying the consultant.
