Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Examine your current or soon-to-be barbecue, and assess its current condition. Take into consideration what it currently has, what it doesn't have and what you would like it to have. After you have decided what you would like to add, the process of choosing barbecue surfaces is easier.
Step2
Decide on how much space you want around the barbecue to be devoted merely to countertop or work space. This surface should be something that won't stain and will easily wipe clean. Note that wood is a poor choice for this; something harder and smoother, such as marble, will be easier. Special cleaning wipes exist for barbecue surfaces, but only work on a selection of possible surfaces. So consider the cleaning ability when choosing your work space surface.
Step3
Use your assessment of the barbecue to plan out what new things can go where and whether they are things that require you to pick the surface material. In many cases, additions to your barbecue already have chosen surfaces, and it is usually in your best interest to keep the original surfaces.
Step4
Consider color and aesthetics when choosing your surfaces. While utility is certainly important, matching your surfaces to your barbecue and your surrounding area will have a much more professional and knowledgeable effect.
Step5
Think about what kinds of things you will be barbecuing and how much room you will need to grill. Knowing a rough estimate of the space you want will help you narrow down your choices of barbecues and allow you to choose one with a surface area that best suits your needs.
