How to Freeze Ova

Many women today are choosing to freeze their ova. It may be because they are undergoing medical treatment which may damage their ova, or it may be because they wish to delay childbearing until their ova are no longer viable. Whatever the reason may be, in order to freeze ova, follow these steps.

1. Contact a fertility clinic of your choice and explain you would like to freeze your ova. They will either refer you to another clinic or explain their ova freezing procedures and fees.
2. Determine if the cost is within your budget. If not, inquire as to whether you could donate some of your ova for research in exchange for a discounted or free-of-charge ova freezing procedure.
3. Know that the procedure is not without physical risks and make sure the clinic has thoroughly explained them to you. You may want legal counsel before entering into a contract with a clinic.
4. Realize you will have to ingest fertility drugs in order to ripen your eggs for removal. There are risks involved, some which may not yet be known. You may have to undergo two to four stimulation cycles in order to retrieve enough eggs.
5. Schedule a procedure when you are ready. Realize some time may pass until the procedure can be performed because your body needs to be at the right menstrual cycle stage before fertility drugs are used.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are freezing your eggs because of medical treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation, let the clinic know. You can be treated much sooner because of this reason.
