Pets are beloved members of your family. They offer companionship, comfort and sometimes, entertainment. You provide them shelter, food and care. Sometimes, your pet is missing and you are devastated, wondering what to do. Here are some ideas on how to find your missing pet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Search your entire home thoroughly. If you are not home, search the inside of the location completely. Cats are curious creatures and end up in odd places. Look in attics, crawl spaces, under and behind furniture and check car engines. Dogs can wind up in weird places as well. Use your flashlight and check dark spaces like under the house, in a sewer,a garage or shed.
Step2
Call local veterinary doctors and pet hospitals with a description of your pet. Contact not only your vet, but others in your area. You never know how far your cat has traveled. Plus, a good Samaritan may not bring your pet to the location closest to you. Check shelters, animal control and rescue groups also. Ask if you can put up posters at their offices as well.
Step3
Create fliers with the information about your missing pet and post them around your neighborhood, in grocery stores, at gas stations and other public places. List only your name and phone number. Posting your address may put you at risk for crime. You can also offer a reward, but there is no need to put how much.
Step4
Go door-to-door and let your neighbors know about the missing pet. Have them ask their young children, since kids usually notice animals more than adults, especially while they are out playing.
Step5
Walk around your neighborhood with a friend or family member. Search slowly and thoroughly. Bring treats or food in a container to shake as you call your pet's name. They don't understand their name, but they will recognize your voice. Listen carefully for any sign they heard you. Your pet may be scared and not come to you immediately. Check under cars, in the trees, storm drains and in ditches. Be prepared for the worst, but plan for the best.
Step6
Leave food and water outside for your pet. This is especially important in case your pet returns while you are not there.
Step7
Post your pet's profile online. Websites such as "Pets911" and "Petfinder" allow you to place information, including a photo and description, about your missing pet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your pet wears a collar with your vet's name, your name and current phone number.
  • Consider having a tracking chip implanted on your pet. This service is offered by many vets for a fee.
