Purchasing fly fishing gear can be an intimidating task for both novices and experienced fly fishermen. New products hit the market almost every day. However, by following a few simple guidelines, you will be able to outfit yourself with the most appropriate and up-to-date fly fishing accessories out there.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a rod. All fly fishermen need the most basic piece of equipment--the rod. Rods tend to range from seven to 10 feet in length and are made of a lightweight material like graphite.

  2. Step 2

Buy fly fishing line. Fly fishing line has different weights and shapes. Which line you pick depends on your fishing conditions and your fly of choice. Your line choice should also be partially based on what type of rod you intend to use.

  3. Step 3

Gather your flies. They don't call it fly fishing for nothing. After the rod, your flies may be the most important piece of fly fishing gear you purchase. It is recommended that fly fishers carry a variety of flies to prepare for varying conditions.

  4. Step 4

Dress appropriately. Fly fishing gear includes clothing such as vests, hats and sunglasses. Pick gear that is functional as well as stylish. For instance, a vest may have plenty of pockets for storage while a good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes from the glare off the water.

  5. Step 5

Buy a pair of waders. When you are fly fishing, you typically will find yourself knee-deep in water to get the best position. You want a pair of waders tall enough to keep the water out and thick enough to protect yourself from the elements.

Tips & Warnings
  • It can be hard to tell the basic equipment from the bells and whistles. Ask the staff at your local sporting goods store or bait shop. They should be able to help you pick out good equipment to get started or update your existing gear.
  • Try not to get talked into buying fly fishing accessories that you don't need or want. A good staff person will help you find what you need and not try to sell you equipment you may not know how to use. Have a basic idea of what kind of conditions you will be fly fishing in or what accessories you want to purchase.
