Casting a fly fishing rod backward, or false casting as it is also known, is different than a normal cast, and there are a few tricks to doing it correctly. Follow the correct procedures to successfully backward cast a fly fishing rod.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly fishing rod
  • Fly tying materials
  • Fly line
  1. Step 1

Use the proper rod. It is important to have a rod that is fitted for you and created to fly fish in the manner for which you intend it.

  2. Step 2

Use the right grip. Experts say misuse of the hand motion, where a wrist should be flicked and stopped around the one o'clock and 11 o'clock spots, can lead to poor false casting.

  3. Step 3

Create the perfect stance by double checking the way you are standing to make sure you are doing it correctly. A good fly fisherman stands with one foot out further than the other, leading with the arm opposite the foot with the most distributed weight.

  4. Step 4

Watch where your elbow rests. To keep a tighter loop on your line, make sure your elbow stays centered, near your body. If you outstretch your arm and elbow, it will create more room for your line to move backward, forward and upward.

  5. Step 5

Keep the fly out of the water. The goal of the backward cast is to eventually get to the spot you want without letting your fly touch the water. So keep at it, and keep the fly in the air.
