A fly fishing net can help you prepare for a great fishing adventure. No matter what size fish you catch, it's easier and faster to land that beauty with the right gear. Always include a fly fishing net as part of your equipment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Land the fish. Then use the net to secure the fish while removing the hook. A net can also be used to measure the fish to make sure it's the appropriate size legal for catching.

  2. Step 2

Catching the fish can be done by pulling the fish onto land or grabbing the fish. When this isn't possible, use the fly fishing net. Lift the fish over the net, and place gently into the net. As the fish squirms, its weight pulls it down further into the net.

  3. Step 3

Consider what size of fish you are catching to determines the size of your net. Use the proper net according to the weight of the fish. Whether you are boat fishing, floating in a tube or wading also determines what style of net to use.

  4. Step 4

Fly fish in waters that are "catch and release" areas. Always keep the fish in direct contact with the water. Gently net the fish and move to shallow water. Remove the hook and place the fish back into the water as soon as possible.

  5. Step 5

Catch and release by using a mesh net, which must always be kept wet. The net holds the water and doesn't remove much slime from the fish. That slime forms a protection against fish diseases and parasites.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fly fishing nets come in various sizes depending on the weight of the fish. Nets can be purchased, or you can make your own. The most common type is a mesh net with a bow tied underneath to secure the fish. Nets with wood or bamboo handles are popular styles.
  • When not in use, keep your fly fishing net securely locked into place on your fishing vest to the ring attached on the end of the net handle.
