Terry cloth, that wonderful loopy fabric used for towels worldwide, is the perfect fabric to use when decorating your kitchen, bathroom or deck. Soft, absorbent and available in a wide range of colors, it can be used in many ways. Any place where water may be present is the perfect place to decorate with terry cloth.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Large terry cloth bath towels
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Sewing machine
  • Tapestry needle for hand-sewing
  • Bath sheet and smaller towels
  • Glue gun with glue
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Polyester fiber-fill
  • Tapestry needle for hand-sewing

In the Kitchen or Bathroom

Step1
Sew a slip cover. Choose three large towels in any color that will suit your decor. Remove the original fabric from the chair, replace it with the terry cloth and use a staple gun to attach it firmly to the chair.
Step2
Make an absorbent bath mat or floor rug. Cut the edges from two towels to the size you want your mat and sew them together, leaving a 4 inch opening to turn the mat right-side out. Turn the mat and hand-sew the small opening shut.
Step3
Personalize hand towels. Choose small towels that match the decor of your kitchen or bath, use your sewing machine's embroidery setting to embroider your initial or favorite design at the ends of the towel. Hang the towels neatly, with the design showing.

On the Deck

Step1
Recover your lounge chair to match your poolside decor. Choose a bath sheet in your favorite color, drape it over your lounge chair and hot glue it to the edges so it won't move.
Step2
Stitch a neck pillow to help you relax by the pool. Cut a 12-by-14 inch piece of terry cloth and sew the longer sides together to form a tube. Sew one of the shorter ends together and turn it right-side out and stuff it with polyester fiber-fill. Fold the unfinished ends of the opening in and hand-sew them together.
Step3
Fold a hand towel in half and sew up the two outside edges to form a large pocket. Turn it right-side out and pin it to the edge of your lounge chair to hold your sun lotion, sunglasses and books or magazines.

on 4/27/2008 I've cut old worn terrycloth, towels and tablecloths, into strips and crocheted them into bath mats.
