Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Applaud after each performance. Most people go to karaoke to let loose and have fun. It's not about being technically proficient; it's about having a good spirit and enthusiasm when performing. Be courteous and clap, even if the singer on stage is really off-key.
Step2
Practice patience when waiting for your song to be played. Karaoke bars have their own procedures for playing songs. Some DJs alternate types of music, others play songs in the order they were requested. Ask the DJ what the rules are before signing up and you'll avoid confusion.
Step3
Gather a number of potential titles to sing. Karaoke bars get pretty crowded, especially on weekends, and someone may choose your intended song before you do. Many bars and clubs have websites that list all the songs in their catalogue. Check them before you go and write a list of possible songs to perform.
Step4
Perform naturally. Sing at your own pace. Don't try to compete with previous performers or worry about having "stage presence." The best karaoke performances are spontaneous.
Step5
Handle the microphone gently if you go up on stage in a group. Pass the mike carefully and make sure the wire isn't tangled.
Step6
Refrain from heckling performers, even if they're a bit tipsy or unprepared. Unless a karaoke singer is utterly obnoxious and insults the audience, there's no reason to boo them.
