How to Install a Garage Wall System

Do you have a garage that is used for everything but parking cars? Imagine pulling up to your garage and seeing all of your possessions neatly organized. Garage organization systems let you rearrange baskets, hooks, and tool organizers with a simple snap. The best part of all--having enough room to actually park your car in the garage.

Things You’ll Need:

Wall slats
Screws (follow size recommended by wall system)
Drill
Baskets, hooks, prongs, etc. that you can purchase with your system
Laser level
Chalk line and chalk
Circular or table saw

Step1

Remove everything from the garage, and sort the contents into piles. Donate or sell the items that you do not plan to keep.

Step2

Measure the length and width of the walls that will be covered with the garage wall system. Purchase the number of wall slats needed to cover this area.

Step3

Locate the studs on the wall using a stud finder. Mark the locations of each stud by snapping a chalk line along each. This will allow you to see the location of each stud as you install the panels.

Step4

Snap a horizontal chalk line at the top of where the wall slats will begin, using a laser level to be sure your line is level.

Step5

Begin in one corner of the garage by installing the first slat level with the chalk line by drilling four screws into each slat. Make sure each screw goes into the middle of each stud.

Step6

Snap the next panel under the previous panel, and secure with screws. Repeat this process until the garage walls are covered with slats. Cut slats with a circular or table saw to custom fit the last pieces.

Step7

Snap baskets, hooks, tool holders and cabinets on to the slats. Organize the storage items that you cleaned out of the garage. Step back, enjoy the look of your newly organized garage, and then park your car in it.
