A leaky sink handle can be more than just an annoying problem. It wastes several gallons of water a day and can cause permanent damage to your sink basin. The most common cause of a leaky sink handle is a worn out washer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Turn off the water supply. Open the faucet to drain any water that is in the pipes.

  2. Step 2

Cover the drain with a towel so you do not lose any small parts down the drain.

  3. Step 3

Remove the sink handle. The screws for the handle may been hidden under a cap for decorative purposes. Remove the worn out washer.

  4. Step 4

Buy a new washer. Take the old washer to the store to ensure that you buy the correct item.

  5. Step 5

Install the new washer. Reattach the handle and screw it in place securely.

  6. Step 6

Run the water and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • To keep your sink handle from getting damaged, cover the wrench with a towel before undoing the faucet. This will protect the finish from getting scratched.
  • If your sink needs frequent washer replacements, the washer seat may need to be replaced. This is fairly inexpensive.
  • Don't try to fix a leaking faucet handle by pushing down on it harder. It will only fix the problem temporarily and it cause more internal damage to the faucet.
