Asking a partner to use a condom can be a bit awkward, especially in the heat of passion. But unless you are in a permanent, monogamous relationship, it just is not an option. You must use a condom. Every time. If you think asking a partner to use a condom is embarrassing, try explaining why you have a sexually-transmitted disease.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Condoms
  • Optional: Safe sex literature

Step1
Leave safe sex literature where your partner can find and read it. This prepares him for discussion later.
Step2
Discuss the matter with your partner at a neutral (not sexy) time, when you are both calm and comfortable. It is possible to be gentle AND direct.
Step3
Buy the condoms yourself. our partner might simply be embarrassed to buy them.
Step4
Carry condoms with you, or place them where you know you will be having sex. If you share some of the responsibility, it might ease the burden on you partner, making her more likely to comply with your safe sex request.
Step5
Use a female condom, if applicable. Again—you taking responsibility might make things a bit easier for your partner, plus you can insert a female condom up to eight hours before intercourse, so no one has to interrupt their lovemaking groove.
Step6
Help him put it on. Make it sexy. This could become his new favorite foreplay.
Step7
Refuse sex. If you've tried it all, and your partner absolutely will not wear a condom, don't do it. Anyone who doesn't care enough about themselves and you to protect your health and futures, isn't worth having sex with anyway.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you know what you are doing if you help put a condom on your partner. See Resources for directions.
