Instructions

  1. Design

    • 1

Choose a software program to design your checks or create your own design. You can obtain MICR characters from several websites and design checks in the design program of your choice.

    • 2

Verify if your check printing software is compatible with financial management programs that enable you to use the information they contain to print completed checks.

    • 3

Enter the required account information. This includes the name and address of the account owner(s), and the bank name and address.

    • 4

Input the routing and account numbers. The routing number is located at the bottom of the check next to the account number. This line is called the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR). Designate a Check Starting Number.

    • 5

Locate the fractional number, usually in the upper right area of a check. It normally has a slash of horizontal line. Enter the numbers as printed on the check.

    Print

    • 6

Proof the information you've entered. After making sure everything is correct, you can either run pre-printed checks with payee information or blank checks to be filled in as needed.

    • 7

Use magnetic ink for the MICR line to ensure smooth processing of any checks you print at home. Be aware that magnetic ink is more expensive than regular ink, and not as easy to find.

    • 8

Run a test page to check that the information is correct and each section is lined up correctly.

    • 9

Save more time by using your own financial management software program, such as Microsoft Money or Quicken, to print directly from within the program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you proof the information on your check. A typo in the routing or account number can cause you some major headaches.

  • The whole check doesn't have to be printed in magnetic ink, just the MICR line

  • Safeguard the computer containing your account information and check printing software. You may want to use password login.
