Deep sea fishing, also known as deep drop fishing, can be fun and challenging at the same time. While it is similar to fishing in a lake or river, it is not identical. This is due to the gear used and the conditions you are fishing in.

From Quick Guide: Deep Sea Fishing
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boat
  • Reel designed for saltwater
  • Rod designed for saltwater
  • Storage tank for fish caught
  1. Step 1

Prepare for sea sickness to make sure you do not get it. This can ruin your fishing trip.

  2. Step 2

Take an antihistamine such as Bonine, get a prescription patch, wear a sea band, or have some ginger root if you think you might get seasick. At least one of these should help to prevent it.

  3. Step 3

Bait your hook once the boat has arrived at the fishing location.

  4. Step 4

Fish from various depths at the fishing locations. Not all fish bite at the same time or same depth.

  5. Step 5

Use at least two different kinds of bait before moving to a new location.

  6. Step 6

Fish from the lowest point to the deepest point. If you go for the middle first and catch a fish, you will scare away anything above it, where bigger and better fish might be.

  7. Step 7

Cast with the freshest bait possible. Change uneaten bait often to keep it this way.

  8. Step 8

Reel in a caught fish with the fish positioned in front of you. Move once the fish is on the boat, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the bait you use is hard bait as soft bait will fall off easy under the harsh conditions of seawater.
  • If you are going through a business to fish, they will have all the necessary equipment to deep sea fish.
  • To minimize your chances of becoming sick on the boat don't have caffeine 24 hours before, drink alcohol the night before, or eat greasy, heavy, or acidic foods before going deep sea fishing. Also, avoid the fumes from the boat while on board.
  • Deep sea fishing requires special fishing equipment. Regular rods and reels can't handle the pressure of the water or fish and saltwater corrodes most metals.
