Independence to provide for oneself is a key factor when considering the needs of a loved one who is handicapped. Making the home comfortable to live in and easy to use is achieved by taking the time to analyze and plan for the person's needs. The bathroom is a good place to start. Accessibility of the toilet for the handicapped individual can be accomplished by following these guidelines.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gauge the exact height your toilet seat based on the individual's needs. This should be done for all bathrooms that will be used by the person. Typical height is 18 inches for handicapped persons. If necessary, do a dry run and place the wheelchair next to the toilet and use this as a starting point for measurements. This is especially true if the wheelchair is special made.

  2. Step 2

Determine from your measurements if you will require a specially-made toilet or if you will need to purchase a raised seat for ease and comfort. Any bathroom supply store should be able to provide this equipment.

  3. Step 3

Ask the individual what level is comfortable to him or her when marking for the grab bar placements. Place the grab bars on both sides of the toilet where the individual can access them easily without straining. Check to ensure each bar is tightly in place.

  4. Step 4

Install your toilet making sure all connections are secure. Have the person test out your changes and make any necessary adjustments if needed.
