How to Buy Plus Size Swimwear

Women everywhere cringe a little at the thought of shopping for swimwear. We've all ended up in that tiny changing room, sucking in our tummies and trying to convince ourselves that the electric purple swimsuit with floral skirt attachment isn't so horrible. But buying plus size swimwear doesn't have to be a nightmare. In fact, you can look downright sexy in your bathing suit this year with a little know-how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try on your old swimsuit. Note what you like about it and what you don't. Does it gap or pinch? Does the bust fit well? Does it ride up? If the leg opening was lower or the back higher would it look more flattering?

  2. Step 2

Think about the rest of your wardrobe. Buying a bathing suit is like buying any other outfit. Which necklines look the best on your body? What kind of underwear is the most flattering for you? What are your three best colors? Use these as a guide in looking for the right swimsuit for you.

  3. Step 3

Measure yourself. Measure your bust, wait, hips, and low hip so that you can check size charts online before you go to the store and (especially if you are shopping via the Internet) to make sure that the bathing suit you choose will fit well.

  4. Step 4

Check the websites for your favorite stores, but check online retailers as well so that you can see a wider selection before you buy. Look for websites that let you shop by body type, and ones that have pictures of plus size models in the swimsuits so that you get a better idea of what it will look like on your body.

  5. Step 5

Go to local retailers that sell plus sized swimsuits to try on the styles and colors that you think will be flattering. Wear a shoe with a heel that day and a thong so that you can see what it will look like sans underwear. If it doesn't do anything for you, don't buy it!

  6. Step 6

Shop for plus size swimwear the same way you would shop for an outfit. Find a skirt or shorts that match the suit, and cute shoes with a raised heel to wear with your new swim suit. Avoid putting on a shapeless tent. Instead, look for a beaded tunic or plunging halter. Choose a chunky bracelet or summery necklace to complete the ensemble and then strut your way to the nearest pool to show off your curves.
