Decide which parts of your body you want to accentuate, and which parts you don't want to expose. If you have great legs, go for a shorter skirt. If you have beautiful shoulders and arms, a halter will look lovely. If you're busty, go for coverage with beautifully structured seams. If you're pear-shaped, look for a dress with details by the bust, a corset, or a full skirt to minimize hips. The goal is to create the appearance of a balanced hourglass shape to show off your figure.

Check online to get ideas. The Internet is a great place to shop for prom dresses if you know your measurements. The selection online is better than any one store, and you're more likely to find a prom dress nobody else will be wearing that night.

Wear foundation garments and comfortable heels to prom. Wear these exact same pieces when you go to try on dresses. A convertible bra, foundation piece for your belly and hips, hose and heels will give you an accurate view of what your dress will look like on prom night. In the dressing room, conduct the "sit down" test to make sure the dress is comfortable. Bring an honest friend with you to help you decide.

Go to local stores in your area with plus size prom dresses. Ask the salesperson what sizes they carry before you rifle through countless racks of too-small dresses to save time and frustration. If you find the perfect dress, put it on hold. Wait a day to buy and try it on again to be sure it's the right one for you.
