How to Buy a Fish Tank Water Test Kit

A water test kit can tell you when something is about to go bad in your tank. You can employ a test kit is to monitor either saltwater or freshwater fish tanks.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Go to a pet store that sells fish supplies. If you have a saltwater tank, make sure the store sells supplies for marine tanks. Some stores that do not sell saltwater fish carry marine fish supplies.

  2. Step 2

    Look at the different kits available to see what meets your needs. Many kits come with 4 basic tests for ammoninia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH levels. Freshwater test kits will display the high and low pH, where as for saltwater will only note high pH levels.

  3. Step 3

    Look at other, individual test kits that are not available in a pack. These include testing for copper, GH and KH levels. These test kits are more specialized according to where you live and the water you receive in your home.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test kits can come with either strips that are dipped into a sample of the water or tubes that are filled with water from the fish tank. You must add chemicals to determine the results.
