How to Buy Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo is a great "green" option for home flooring. Because bamboo is a grass rather than a tree, it is more eco-friendly than other hardwood floor options. Since it can be harvested every six years, bamboo is a renewable source. Bamboo also is more durable than many hardwood floors. Here are some tips for buying bamboo flooring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the pattern on the bamboo. The growth ring is called the "knuckle" and the distinctive "nodes" can be seen in the grain on some flooring. However, bamboo flooring can also be purchased without these markings.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a horizontal cut for a wider strip, or decide on the vertical cut for a more narrow strip. The horizontal cuts normally show the distinctive bamboo markings.

  3. Step 3

Shop for premium grade flooring versus discount flooring. Premium flooring comes in various floor lengths, widths and stains.

  4. Step 4

Inquire about formaldehyde-free bamboo. Some low-quality bamboo flooring will have higher formaldehyde emissions. High-quality flooring has a lower emission that exceeds most recommendations for indoor air quality.

  5. Step 5

Check the warranty provided by your supplier. Most companies provide a lifetime structural warranty and a 15-year finished warranty.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most bamboo is available in two shades, natural or amber. However, some companies offer the option of hand-scraped, stained bamboo.
  • Stand-woven flooring is also available. It is even stronger, more durable and more expensive than the traditional styles.
