Instructions

    • 1

Use the major divisions of the Bible as a starting point for your study: The Pentateuch, historical books, prophets, psalms and wisdom books, gospels, acts and letters and the rest of the New Testament. Know which books belong to which category.

    • 2

Read a Study Bible. Examine the commentary and reference notes included in the scripture. Study Bibles also have a synopsis at the beginning of each book.

    • 3

Consult a Bible handbook to review major events and themes in the Old and New Testaments. Know all major figures, their significance, major events in their lives and their family history.

    • 4

Memorize key scriptures and understand the significance of each. Have a working knowledge of the geography of places described in the Bible. Review major prophecies and prophets.

    • 5

Take a practice exam. Utilize a Bible concordance and dictionary to review in detail any parts you're not sure of. The "Presbyterian Bible Content Exam Learning Tool" contains practice tests with questions on general Bible knowledge.

    • 6

Set aside time each day to review your Study Bible. Several hours each week up until the exam should be used for specific studying of topics.

    • 7

Join a Bible Study group, either in person or online. Discuss the material with others to solidify the knowledge you've gained and have greater insight of the text.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there is a verse or scripture you don't understand, use a different version of the Bible for clarification.

  • Keep all your books and materials in one location for easy access. Your study area should have a desk or table, good lighting and be relatively quiet.
