How to Buy Tanzanite

When buying tanzanite, as with diamonds and other gemstones, look for the four Cs: color, clarity, cut and carat. Tanzanite comes in a continuum of shades, varying greatly in quality and clarity. So, use this guide to know what you're getting into before searching out that one perfect tanzanite.

Instructions

1. Look for tanzanite with a deep, rich hue. A good tanzanite will be a vivid shade of blue, possibly bordering on violet. Tanzanites are graded by color, going from AAA, which are the most vibrant colors, to A, B and C.

2. Inspect the stone in multiple lighting conditions. This will allow you to get a feeling for the stone's true color and to ensure that it is the color you think you're getting. Also, good tanzanite should flash red or pink undertones under regular incandescent light.

3. Check the gemstone for inclusions. Some types of inclusions are insignificant, while others can compromise the stone's durability. Find a stone without obvious inclusions or cracks, especially near the surface of the stone.

4. Choose the cut of stone you want. Round, emerald, cushion and trillion are some of the options to choose from. Whether the stone has been cut well or not can make a difference in the brilliance of it, so always compare stones of a similar cut before deciding on one.

5. Decide roughly how large you want the gem to be. Keep in mind, though, that many factors play into the cost of the stone, not just weight. Therefore size is not always an accurate indicator of price.

6. Find a reputable gemstone dealer from which to purchase your new gemstone. Look for a dealer who is a member of the International Colored Gemstone Association.

Tips & Warnings

• Tanzanite comes graded for clarity on a scale ranging from VVS (very very slightly included) to I3 (Imperfect, with inclusions severely affecting appearance and durability). If you want the best, consider VVS tanzanite exclusively.

• Remember that pricing is all in the quality and size of the stone. If you want a large stone of good color and clarity then be prepared to pay significantly for it.

• Disregard claims made about the superiority of Block D tanzanite. Block D indicates the area from which the stone was mined and does not imply anything about its quality.
