Starting a non-profit is basically the same as any other business, with only a few extra forms to fill out and submit for the 501c (3) status. All situations are different, but often a non-profit can be started without using attorneys or paying a high-priced company to do the paperwork.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the name of the non-profit and select a board of directors.

  2. Step 2

Obtain an incorporation packet from the secretary of the state in which the non-profit will be incorporated, and the Form 1023 packet from the IRS.

  3. Step 3

Submit the incorporation papers to the state in which the non-profit will be incorporated. Pay all applicable fees.

  4. Step 4

Go online to submit the form for an Employers Identification Number (EIN) at the IRS website.

  5. Step 5

Complete and submit the Form 1023 packet to the IRS. Pay all applicable fees.

  6. Step 6

Get a business license from the city in which the non-profit will be located and secure office space.

Tips & Warnings
  • A link to the secretary of the state in which the non-profit will be incorporated can usually be found at the state's website.
  • Forms for the business license for the non-profit usually can be obtained by going to the city clerk's office or by downloading them from the city's website.
  • Depending on the nature of the non-profit, the city, county or state in which the non-profit will be located may charge additional fees. Fees for inspections of the property in which the non-profit will be based also could be charged.
