Cross-dressing is when one dresses in clothing and accessories traditionally worn by the opposite gender. There are several reasons one may choose to cross-dress, and is not necessarily a sign of sexual orientation. Research indicates most who cross-dress are mentally sound heterosexuals. Most cross-dressers are male, which makes it difficult to find women's shoes and clothing to fit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Realize that many people will not understand your desire to cross-dress. It is difficult for most men to look believably like a woman and that it may be perceived as odd to others.
Step2
Learn the art of cross-dressing by watching other public cross-dressers, such as Eddie Izzard.
Step3
Visit a makeup counter and ask the consultant to help you apply your makeup properly. If you're not comfortable approaching a stranger, ask your wife, sister or female friend to help you.
Step4
Join a support group to meet other cross-dressers. Learning some secrets of dressing as the other gender can really help your appearance.
Step5
Find clothing shops that cater to cross-dressing. Cross-Dress and Xdress have many selections online.
Step6
Purchase undergarments and filler products such as breast forms and gaffs.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to start small and begin wearing women's jeans and a blouse before you start using makeup and wearing a wig. This will transition you into cross-dressing.
  • Avoid heels. They are uncomfortable, and it takes time to learn to walk properly in them.
  • Avoid glittery, flashy clothing. Until you feel comfortable with people's reactions, try not to draw too much attention to yourself.
