Piano tuning is an important part of ownership. If a piano is allowed to go without being tuned, the overall pitch can be affected and actually get lower over time. All pianos need to be tuned, even the expensive ones. In fact, higher quality pianos need to be tuned more frequently. Finding a piano tuner will keep your piano music on key.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Phone
  • Piano
  1. Step 1

Give your local music store a call or visit the store to ask them if they can recommend a good piano tuner. They may have someone they regularly recommend or have business cards of various tuners. You can ask your piano teacher or someone at your church. If you purchased your piano second-hand, ask selling owner who has been tuning the piano.

  2. Step 2

Check with the Piano Technicians Guild to see if your tuner is in the guild or to get names of members in the guild. To become a part of this guild, a technician or tuner must pass a series of thorough examinations. If they need help passing these tests, they must take classes until the knowledge is obtained to pass. Therefore, you can be sure that a member of this guild has sufficient knowledge to get the job done right.

  3. Step 3

Visit the websites of the piano tuners you are interested in hiring. The sites may give you information on how long an individual tuner has been in business and his credentials. If the tuner does not have a website, call and ask these questions.

  4. Step 4

Ask the tuner for references of previous customers or check for this information on the website. If some of the tuner's customers are churches or schools, you can call for a reference.

  5. Step 5

Remember a high price doesn't always mean high quality. Evaluate piano tuners to get the best tuner for the best price and don't forget that just because a tuner is expensive it doesn't make them a good or qualified technician.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tune your piano four times in the first year. After the first year, have it tuned twice a year depending upon how often you use your piano and the atmospheric conditions it is subject to. Your piano will also need to be tuned after an extreme temperature change such as from winter to spring, an extreme change in humidity or if it has been through a long distance move.
