How to Write a Vampire Novel

The vampire novel is a fictional pastime and can feature some of the most terrifying and horrific prose in fiction novels. Writing a vampire novel can be a daunting task if you aren't working with a few writing basics. Get on your way to writing your vampire novel and making Gothic history.

Instructions

    • 1

Read a few vampire novels written by other authors, the most prolific of course is Anne Rice. Decide which elements of vampire lore appeal to you and use them as ideas for your novel.

    • 2

Create a main character that you feel you can write accurately and believably. Take elements of your personality or from people you know so you can draw a believable sketch of a person.

    • 3

Write a treatment for the novel, perhaps a short story to help you get the basic premise for what you want to write. Make a diagram at the very least of the action in your book.

    • 4

Keep notes during the writing process of things you intend to change or go back to, but for your first draft simply write what comes out. Feel the arc of the story develop as you write it.

    • 5

Go through your novel and tweak and edit any of the scary scenes, making sure you add plenty of atmosphere and Gothic rhetoric. Name your novel something sensual and intriguing as this will help to add to the vampiric lore of your story.

Tips & Warnings

  • Think about the time period you want your novel to be. Many vampire novels are written about modern day or futuristic vampires, so you might check out what those writers are doing. Take note of what works and what doesn't for you.

  • Do not simply steal another authors vampire skeleton. Think of your own history of how your world of vampires came to be this way. Again, Anne Rice is a great example of an author who used both her own imagination and historical references to build her world of vampires.
