Mold not only causes allergic reactions in millions of people, but it can often be deadly in the case of black mold (also called toxic mold). Companies specializing in mold prevention are constantly developing new products in the fight against mold. Use these steps to learn what you can do in your own home to prevent the growth of mold.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Keep moisture at bay in and around your home. This can be done by cleaning up spilled fluids immediately, not allowing water to pool around the outside of your house (also a breeding ground for mosquitos) and keeping your air at the proper humidity (around 50%).
Step2
Apply a mold guard during the construction phase of your house. It is applied to the wood framing before the drywall is installed.
Step3
Install heavy duty weather stripping on your windows and doors. One of the most common places to find moisture and mold growth in your home is on your window sills. Companies like AllerGuard offer mold proof weather stripping for all your housing needs.
Step4
Keep your bathroom and kitchen clean and dry. These are the most mold-friendly rooms in the house. Many bathrooms also do not have windows, which allow the steam to vent. If you are a home owner, consider adding windows to your bathrooms. If you can't add windows, keep the bathroom fan on when using the shower or sink and clean toothbrush holders and rinse cups clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding mold guard products to your house during construction or even retroactively can add value to your home and peace of mind for your family.
  • Mold grows in moist areas where bacteria is present and takes only 24 hours to start growing when conditions are right.
  • If you already have mold in your house, hire a professional mold removing service to do the job safely.
