Step1
Go to Skateboard Spots and check out the listings. Only one spot is named, with an address. You might want to set the people straight at Skateboard Spots when you've finished your trip, and update them on all of the skate spots you found.
Step2
Check out the listings at Official New York's website. The site lists 25 skate spots as well as six in surrounding boroughs.
Step3
Visit the NYC Parks and Recreation Department's website. The site provides information about several skate parks, as well as has a downloadable release form. There are pictures, and some of the entries even include hours.
Step4
Hit MapQuest or buy a city map and go to the skate spots listed. Fodor's Flashmaps New York City would be a good item. As one review put it, "this small book can be pulled out quickly and referenced without having to unfold a huge map". Nothing says "tourist" or "mug me now" like a huge map.
Step5
Ask the skaters you run into for more spots and directions. They should be able to give you lots of information that isn't "official".
Step6
Keep track of the information you're given. New York's a big city and it's quite easy to get lost.
Step8
Be aware of pedestrians and signs banning skateboarding.
