How to Become a Buddhist Monk

Buddhist monks have been around for well over 2,000 years, as have Buddha's teachings and practices. There are different schools of monks but all have the same basic tenets. It's not as difficult to find a teacher or monastery as it was not so many years ago, but the training is rigorous and exacting.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the benefits and disadvantages of the monastic life before making a commitment to the Buddhist lifestyle. You must comprehend the teachings thoroughly before making this decision, because of the lifelong commitment of a Buddhist monk. Of course, there are those who rescind their vows after ordination but this is strongly discouraged.

    • 2

Find a Buddhist Center and prepare to receive training from a Buddhist teacher. It is important to spend years in living according to the Buddhist practices. If you feel that this is what you are called to do, you must enter into a three-fold refuge of the Buddha, the Buddhist teachings and a community of enlightened believers (Sangha). You must understand the "Door to Satisfaction" that leads to Dharma.

    • 3

Learn to live the life of a Buddhist to gain the proper understanding of Buddhist behavior, the importance of a good attitude and the ability to concentrate your mind. Ordination comes after at least five years of living in a Sangha if this is possible. If not, make sure your teacher is close enough so you can go to him for guidance.

    • 4

Save enough money to be self-sufficient for two to three years because very few communities provide financial support. Sponsorship is usually available after this time. Although you may be given permission to take normal jobs to support yourself if needed, it's not advised and is contrary to the disciplinary rules of monastic life.

    • 5

Study and understand the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eight-Fold Path and spend time in meditation as often as possible. You'll learn how to meditate effectively from your teacher and continue on the path to ordination with true sincerity, not as an escape from the world.

    • 6

Remember, once you have been ordained as a Buddhist monk you responsible for living a life that does not dishonor Buddhism, the Buddhist organization or the Buddhist community (Sangha). You must rescind worldly property, pursuits and thoughts and prepare to dedicate your life to the Buddhist principles.
