Preventing dental problems is best, but sometimes it's necessary to replace one's own teeth with a denture or bridgework. This is known as restorative dentistry. Fixed bridgework replaces missing teeth, do not move while eating and chewing and look like natural teeth. A removable bridge comes out and is cleaned like a denture.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Replace missing teeth for a healthier and nicer looking smile. Missing teeth make it hard to chew food properly and can cause other healthy teeth to shift. Bridgework is an option and can be fixed or removable.

  2. Step 2

Care for permanent bridgework by brushing and flossing your teeth as your dentist recommends. He will show you how to use a dental floss threader that allows you to get a special, thick dental floss, made especially for bridgework, around and under the bridgework to keep food particles from being trapped and plaque from forming.

  3. Step 3

Brush removable bridgework every time you brush your teeth. Remove the bridge and brush thoroughly with a toothbrush or denture brush and toothpaste, rinse and replace in your mouth after you have brushed your natural teeth. Finish by rinsing with a mouthwash.

  4. Step 4

Soak the removable dental bridgework overnight in a denture soaking solution, followed by a good brushing. Do this at least twice a week to brighten the teeth and thoroughly clean the bridgework.

  5. Step 5

Purchase a water jet type of dental cleaning machine for dentures or bridgework. This is excellent for your natural teeth, but is especially useful to clean around and under permanent bridgework to remove food particles and plaque.

  6. Step 6

See your dentist yearly, or more often if recommended. Have a thorough examination of any dentures or bridgework. It's especially important to make sure the natural teeth that support the bridgework remain in good condition.
