Becoming a movie scenic artist requires at least some form of talent. It can be a hard occupation to break into, so desire for the job is a must.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Art education
  • Portfolio of previous work

Step1
Be sure you have a desire for, and at least some talent for painting, drawing, sketching, or other artistic challenge involved in making scenery.
Step2
Go to an accredited school to get a degree in scenic art.
Step3
Get an internship during your schooling to help get experience and create a portfolio. If an internship is not available, during and after school, do some work for free to build your portfolio.
Step4
Start with a small company or theater to gain experience.
Step5
Find a job. In the beginning many will probably be unpaid and as you gain experience you will find those that are willing to pay for your work.

Tips & Warnings

  • The majority of movie scenic work is freelance.
  • You may be required to touch up work that set painters have done.
  • Some people are satisfied with working on smaller locations and won't have to worry about competing for jobs.
  • You will need to work independently without supervision easily.
  • You will more than likely create your own hours within the time allotted to get the project done.
  • Being able to work on a team with other artists is vital to being hired again.
  • You will need to be able to work under tight deadlines.
  • You will be required to buy your own supplies for each job.
