Step 1
Check out your local competition. Find out if there is a Blockbuster down the road or another little cozy local shop nearby your store. You don't want a big competitor like Blockbuster down the street from you, or even within a few blocks.
-
Step 2
Look up suppliers of videos--you can try LowPricesForYou.com. You will want to have a selection of DVDs and VHS in your store. It is best to have a variety of movie genres from romantic and comedy, to drama and thriller. People value choice and you want to be the store that gives them what they want.
-
Step 3
Choose new releases. New releases represent the most important selections in your store. Ask for DVD's that are due out soon and put order any that are coming out three months from now. Stay on top of the new releases. The best way to stay on top of things is by building a relationship with the people at your mechanise distributor: They'll keep you on top of new releases as well as reissues. But enough from them and you'll eventually get discounts and bulk rates.
-
Step 4
Choose a popular location for your video store. If you are going to take out a lease on a shop, then choose wisely. You want to be close to where the action is and attract locals. Main streets and areas where restaurants and foot traffic is best. Make sure your store has ample parking as well.
-
Step 5
Run the business on your own and with family members when starting out. It will lower your start-up costs and allow you to really learn about the video business. You might want to hire someone for the accounting but you can pretty much do everything else.

on 10/12/2008 Using lowpricesforyou.com as a "Model" is a lack in judgement. They sell 10 to 15 year old movies as "New Releases" and their sales pitch is misleading to say the least. Check the internet and you will find several complaints against them.
