The Windows desktop background is the image on the desktop that appears behind the shortcuts. Windows comes with a package of images and patterns to use as a background, or you can use any solid color or another image file as your background. The following steps explain how to do this.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring up the "Display Properties" screen by placing the mouse cursor over a blank area of the desktop. Click the right mouse button to access the context menu and choose "Properties." You also can access the "Display Properties" screen by clicking on the "Start" menu. Select "Control Panel," and then "Appearances and Themes." Open the "Display" shortcut.

  2. Step 2

Select the "Desktop" tab from the "Display Properties" screen.

  3. Step 3

Pick a picture from the Background list by clicking on it and click on "Center, Tile or Stretch" to select the position. Personal pictures in the "My Pictures" folder are listed by name in the Background list.

  4. Step 4

Choose a background picture in another location by clicking on the "Browse" button. You can use any files with the following extensions: .bmp, .dib, .gif, .htm or .jpg. Click on "Center, Tile or Stretch" to select the position. The position options will be unavailable if you choose an .htm document; it will be automatically stretched to fill your background.

  5. Step 5

Use a color from the "Color" drop-down box to fill any space not used by the background picture.
