Windows Explorer allows a file list to be sorted by any file detail that can be displayed. Each detail can be sorted in ascending or descending order. The following steps explain how to sort a file list in Windows Explorer and determine how a file list is sorted.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Bring up a Windows Explorer window and view your files in detail mode by clicking on the "View" menu item and then clicking on "Details." The detail view is most helpful when viewing a sorted list.
Step2
Click on the "View" menu item, and then click on "Choose Details…" Check the details you wish to display and sort by. Click the "OK" button and the selected details will display.
Step3
Move the mouse cursor over one of the column headings in the file list and left-click on it. The file list will sort by that column.
Step4
Look at the arrow just to the right of the column heading name you sorted by. An upward pointing arrow means the list is in ascending order by that column.
Step5
Select the same column heading again and the list will sort by the same column, only in descending order. Notice how the arrow points downward to indicate the list is sorted by the selected column in descending order.
Step6
Practice looking for the location and direction of the sort arrow when viewing a file list to know how it is sorted.
