For the literature lover, there is often nothing better than curling up with a good book on a rainy day--if they can find a comfortable space, that is. Reading in the bedroom can lead to drowsiness. A living room is only conducive if there aren't others drowning out your concentration with the television. The solution is simple; build a book nook. It's easy and rewarding.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Books
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Finished ½-1 inch-thick wood pieces
  • Shelf braces (2-3 for each shelf)
  • One or two pieces of comfortable furniture for seating
  • One or two small end tables
  • One or two lamps
  1. Step 1

Choose your area. Even if you have only the corner of a room to work with, it is still plenty of space for your book nook. Avoid the noisiest areas of your home when choosing your space.

  2. Step 2

Examine the walls. You will be putting up bookshelves and must determine how many you will need. Plan to have one shelf for every twenty books. Measure the wall (or walls) horizontally. Remember when measuring, if you want your bookshelves to meet at the corner of the room, one shelf will be longer than the other to account for the corner space.

  3. Step 3

Visit your local home improvement store. You can find a variety of different shelving types there ranging from metal and wire, to various types of wood and a variety of shelf braces.

  4. Step 4

Purchase comfortable furniture for the area. One or two pieces, depending on the size of your space, would be ideal. To save money, secondhand furniture can be purchased at thrift stores, flea markets and online.

  5. Step 5

Mount the shelves according to accompanying directions. For a more modern look, stagger shelves on the wall, but make sure they are level.

  6. Step 6

Organize furniture next to lamps and end tables. Make sure the end tables are close enough to seats to rest beverages while you read, and that lamps are positioned to offer optimal light for decreased eye-strain.

  7. Step 7

Arrange books on the shelves, make a hot cup of tea, and settle in for a long read.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use halogen lamps. They are known to get extremely hot which is potentially damaging your nearby books.
