If you habitually smoke, drink or eat sticky foods around your laptop, even if you just spend a lot of time typing on it, the keyboard will get dirty and the keys will no longer perform as they used to. Follow this method for cleaning up your act, or at least cleaning up the keyboard so the keys last longer and perform better. The entire procedure takes an hour.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cotton swabs
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Household or automotive cleaner

Step1
Turn off the computer.
Step2
Inspect the keyboard for visible debris. Remove any visual debris with a cotton swab.
Step3
Blast compressed air in the crevices between keys.
Step4
Spray cleaner onto the cleaning cloth. Wipe each key thoroughly.
Step5
Go over the crevices again with a cotton swab.

Tips & Warnings

  • To avoid having to perform this procedure too often, regularly blow dust out from under the keys with compressed air or use a vacuum cleaner with attachments especially made for home electronics.
  • If you don't have a household cleaner handy, use isopropyl alcohol or water with mild soap.
  • If you regularly use the laptop in places where the keyboard is prone to get dirty, consider buying a silicone or rubber boot or skin to fit over the keyboard. Not all laptop models have boots to fit them, however.
